Frogmore Gardens – Open Day

Frogmore Gardens, Windsor open for Thrive

Thrive has been chosen as the beneficiary of a very special open day at Frogmore Gardens, Windsor on Wednesday May 18, 2011.

Thrive is the only charity of its kind in the UK that helps disabled people harness the therapeutic benefits of gardening. And the charity, whose headquarters are near Reading, Berkshire, is delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has chosen Thrive to benefit from this event.

Loved by Queen Victoria and Queen Charlotte, Frogmore is a 300 acre beautiful landscaped garden rich in history with a large lake, dating from the 18th century, fine trees, lawns, flowers, flowering shrubs and gravel paths.

Frogmore House has been a royal retreat since the 18th century. Indeed Queen Victoria was inspired to write ‘all is peace and quiet and you only hear the hum of the bees, the singing of the birds’.

Today the house and gardens are used by the Royal Family for private entertaining.

The gardens are only open a handful of times during the year, and May is the best time to visit.

Thrive staff and volunteers will be on hand during the day to talk about the charity, and there are optional private garden tours available which may be booked in advance by contacting Thrive. The cost is £3 per person.

There will be a refreshment tent serving teas, coffees, cold drinks and snacks or you can bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds.

The gardens are wheelchair accessible but some of the gravel paths may render pushing a chair difficult.

Tickets to visit the gardens are just £5 and available from, by calling 0118 988 5688 or you can buy on the day. Under fives are free of charge and there are no other concessions as this is a charity event. Frogmore opens at 10am and last admission is 4pm.

If you want to extend your time and visit the house as well as the gardens, tickets can be purchased on the day using cash or cheques only and concessions are available
